Yoga Nidra

Yoga nidra, also known as yogic sleep, is a form of guided relaxation to restore and refresh, where the physical body drops into a state of profound rest in between wakefulness and sleep, while the mind remains fully conscious. During this practice, the nervous system is pacified, and our minds go into a meditative state inducing a deep relaxation response. A session will usually include breath awareness and a rotation of consciousness, where one's awareness is directed around the different parts of the body to calm the mind and release underlying muscular tension.

At the heart of a yoga nidra practice is the setting of a resolve, a simple, short and positive statement in the first person (e.g. “I am calm”), repeated at the start and end, which is likened to planting a seed and then watering it. Studies have shown that the setting of an intention during a mindfulness practice has been shown to work by stimulating cognitive restructuring processes (Sedlmeier et al. 2012). One of the longer-term goals of a regular Yogic Sleep practice is to realise your personal intention through impressing it on your subconscious mind when it is most receptive to autosuggestion, in the state of deep relaxation occasioned by the practice.

That’s not to say that the effects cannot be felt from the first session, however. Yoga nidra is more commonly practised to let go of stress, and has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and increase the amount of alpha-wave activity in the brain (Mandlik et al. 2002), a mental state associated with deep relaxation.
