Stress Relief Workshop

Computer work can make us so disconnected from our bodies that we may not even realise when our nervous systems have become activated. Over time, we can become so habituated to our raised stress levels that they become like low-level background noise that we’ve learned to switch ourselves off to. Of course, the dangers of allowing stress to remain elevated are many and obvious – it can negatively impact our emotional and physical health and our relationships. While there might be little we can do to prevent stress in the first place, we can learn to manage it and bring ourselves back to balance with some simple practices.

In this experiential workshop, we cover a variety of accessible, body-focused interventions proven to relieve stress. After a brief discussion of definitions and the mechanisms behind how stress occurs and accumulates, you will be guided through a series of techniques which evoke the relaxation response, calming the mind and dissolving patterns of habitual tension in the body. These may include mindfulness, breath awareness, restorative yoga postures, dynamic rest, and self-massage (acupressure and Myofascial Release). Cultivating a direct, moment-to-moment experience with ourselves underpins these practices, and research shows that this is an impactful approach to balancing the nervous system and reducing anxiety symptoms (Sugawara et al., 2020).

No props are necessary, although we do recommend having a notebook and pen handy for taking notes. Some of our postures will be reclined, so you may also wish to bring along a blanket or towel if on hard floor and a cushion for comfort.
